Temple History
Product Image

The Dakshineswar Kali Temple, located on the eastern banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata, West Bengal, is one of the most revered Hindu temples dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is not only a place of worship but also a significant landmark in India's spiritual and cultural history. The temple was built in 1855 by Rani Rashmoni, a philanthropist and devotee of Maa Kali. Before embarking on a pilgrimage to Kashi, she had a divine vision in which Kali instructed her to build a temple on the banks of the Ganges, where devotees could worship her. Inspired by this vision, she bought 20 acres of land in Dakshineswar and commissioned the temple's construction. There are 12 Shiva temples lined along the riverbank, built in the Aat-Chala (eight-roofed) Bengal style. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa, one of India’s greatest mystics, served as the head priest of the temple.
